Studying in College A Primer Q: How do I structure my time in college? Do you really get as much free time as people say you do? A: Ah, if I had a nickel for every college study strategy I’ve heard … well … I’d probably have like 6 to 7 nickels, I guess. Needless to say, college strategies are a dime a dozen (so I guess I could buy a few dozen college strategies with those nickels). A common response you’ll hear is that for every hour of in-class time you spend, you should prepare to spend 3 hours outside of class working on the subject. While I’m sure someone somewhere has benefited from that advice, I’m here to tell you that I have yet to meet someone who actually applies it when they get to college. The most useful advice I’ve ever heard on this topic is the following: treat college like a 9 to 5 business that you run. No one is here in college to wake you up, or tell you when to go to bed, or when to do laundry, or really anything. The only thing you *have* to do is show up to class, and sometimes your professor won’t even require attendance, so in that case the only thing you’ll *have* to do is show up to the exams. Outside of that? There’s nothing you HAVE to do. But all this free time is more or less an illusion, because college tests how good you are at controlling the time that you have in front of you. When I got here freshman year, I had no idea how to manage my day at all. High school basically plans your entire day out for you. When you get here, it’s up to you. The 9 to 5 business hour plan is there to give you a baseline. So if you are really not able to think up any study plan (and this is totally fine), this plan is there to keep you on schedule. But the reason why I like it so much is that it separates your work time and your relaxation time. If you clock in at 9, work as much as you can throughout the day (going to class, synthesizing notes, doing homework), and then clock out at 5, well, you’ve earned a couple hours of break! Go do an intramural, take a nap in the library, serve in the community, see a play, or hit up that quirky model train club you don’t want to tell your friends you’re going to. The idea here is that you’re the one controlling the time; the time isn’t controlling you. You’re the one deciding when to rest, and you’re the one deciding when to do work. You’ll feel bad when you walk past the library at 5:01 seeing a bunch of people working all the time, but keep your chin up and smile. All that means is that they weren’t able to control their time as well as you did. Now, the other half of the 9 to 5 business hour plan is that it’s a business that you OWN. What does this mean? Well, it means that if you have to come in early, you’re going to do it. If it means if you have to work late, you’re going to do it. Your business is something you’ve thrown capital and hard work into. You can’t let it fade away just because you decided to stay rigid on your times. Make no mistake, you’ll have tests on the same day. You’ll have 3 presentations and a quiz in 2 days. And on those days, you’re going to have to put in a little more than a 9 to 5. But if you see it as a business you’re running, your reaction to working overtime is “Yeah, this sucks, but hey, this is my thing. I’m going to own this.” Pretending you run a business actually is a trick to teach yourself ownership of a major task. And so by doing this, you’re at least 2.5 semesters ahead of your peers. Now you might wonder how this has all worked for me. Well, at first I followed it rigidly, but I expanded the hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. My first semester here, I made sure I clocked in at 9 and clocked out at 8. Rarely would I do work after 8, and I would really just watch TV. Of course, I got super distracted a lot during the day, so having longer hours just meant that I got the same amount done as I would have had I worked nonstop from 9 to 5. But as the weeks and semesters go by, you’ll start turning the 9 to 5 into your own thing, and that’s when you actually are certified as someone who’s figured out time management. The 9 to 5 is a base framework where you can get a feel for what’s expected in college and create a routine around it. But it’s getting used to that routine that will help you stress way, WAY less. So that’s the “big picture,” but I’m a man who loves practical tips, so here are some: 1.  Find “your place.”  Pick a spot on campus and decide that this is the place where you will dominate all of your classes. For me, it’s the Undergraduate Library at Illinois. It’s underground, so that kicks out all of the above-ground distractions like grass and sunshine and happiness. Secondly, it’s a boring-looking place. I secretly think it was designed that way on purpose. It’s a great place to study for long hours. Avoid “pretty” places to study. Cause trust me, between the view from the ACES library on a fall evening and acid/base titration, you will 10/10 always choose to stare out at the sun. 2. Use Google Calendar. This one is mostly for the guys, because I’m starting to learn that girls have been using Google Calendar for years on end and they never bothered to tell their Y-chromosomed counterparts about it. But yes, Google Calendar is how I manage what I have to do. You can play with the settings and have your classes show up every week. This helps you see exactly how much time you have and where you can work on what assignments. I’m serious. Google Calendar is the secret to all of this, and the sooner you befriend it, the sooner you can sprint away from the hellfires that come from not knowing when deadlines are. The best part about Google Calendar is that it syncs really well between your devices, so you’re always up to date. Also, I’m pretty sure that the people who designed Google Calendar were college students, because some of those features are suspiciously too awesome. 3.  Have morning and evening routines. Lots of studies show that having solid routines to open and close a day can be restful and energizing for those who practice them. Almost without fail, my morning routine every day is wake up around 7, brush my teeth, shower, change, eat breakfast, spend a little extra time sipping my coffee, read what I can in the paper, and walk to the library and do my Bible devotionals. Only after that entire process do I even think about work. My evening routine could use some work, though! Some good ideas are turning screens off 20 minutes before going to bed, reading a chapter of something, and/or making a to-do list for the next day. 4.  Don’t skip on rest. This means both sleep and waking relaxation. One of my biggest annoyances with modern culture is that we glamorize workaholism. What they don’t tell you is how quickly you’ll burn out and lose everything you’ve worked for in the process. Do not think yourself a hero for never sleeping. Do not think yourself a hero for never having fun. You’re only cheating yourself from legitimate success. The human body needs rest. The human brain needs rest as well. Rest well. In your off-hours, do things that are productive but relax you. Listening to podcasts is an amazing start. I go on long walks all over campus. My friend’s teaching himself guitar. Of course, we all love YouTube and Netflix, and for sure do both of those things. But make sure you rest well. I cannot overstate how stupid it is to think you can pull all-nighters all of the time. 5.  Put people first. Always put people first. If your friend went through a rough breakup, take her out to lunch. If your significant other feels like you’ve not been talking to them much, set aside your Friday and spend time with them. Call your mom. Get dinner with the people on your floor. Text your brother. Play frisbee with your friends if it’s nice on the Quad. FaceTime that one high school friend who’s somewhere in Colorado. Homework is important, but you can find a way to get that homework done later. You’re here to get a degree, but if you can’t get your priorities in order, what good will that degree really do you? In some cases back in the 1990’s it was found that a patient was put into a cab and the cab driver paid to take the patient away and let out on a street corner somewhere in a city in the USA. Some stories have been told that patients only had on a hospital gown and diaper and dumped on the curb. The law also requires the medical tratment facility to run tests, to rule out an emergency medical condition, can be screened by a physcian, nurse practicioner, physcian assistant. The patient must not just be triaged, which is a process in which order of priority a patient is to be screened and treated, but must be assessed to whether the patient has any health or safety issue that will result in impairment of life or death. The law states that the patient must be stabilized before any kind of means to transfer may occur. Supporting documentation both from the physcian or medical doctor, nurse practioner, physcian assistant and nursing care staff must also accompany the patient prior to any transfer. The patient must be deemed stable with no health or life threatening condition occuring during transfer. Hospitals were being burdened with the financial costs of treating patients who were uninsured or didn’t have a means to pay for services rendered. Other factors were also researched and was just more than having financial means to pay. Social groups such as poor blacks and hispanic groups were also profiled to have the inability to pay for services rendered. Motivating factors for incentives to patient dump include â€Å"increasing number of uninsured, healthcare cost containment measures, the common law no-duty rule, and ineffective state statutory responses†. Healthcare Ethics Paper Cost cutting measures though is the primary reason for patient dumping and with the common law no -duty rule, both hospitals and physcians have used this measure to decrease liability in servies rendered without the possibility of reemburishment. But in order to protect the patient from denial of care, it is required by law for hospitals and treatment facilities to be compliant within Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act Law. The patient must be determined to be medically stable before any kind of transfer is to be arranged. So how do the four major eithical principles apply to patient dumping? To answer this we need to look closer at the four major ethical principles and expand on each principle as it applies to our ethical problem. The four major ethical principles are: Autonomy – respecting self-determination of individuals and protecting those persons with diminished autonomy. 2. Benefice – giving highest priority to the welfare of persons and maximizing benefits to their health. 3. Non-maleficence – avoiding and preventing harm to persons or, at least, minimizing harm. . Justice – treating persons with fairness and equity and distributing benefits and burdens of health care as fairly as possible in society. With Autonomy being the first ethical prinicpal, the patient either must be able to understand and make decisions based on the information presented by the hospital for his or her own medical care. If the patient is not in a mental state to do that, then it must be det ermined either through a desginated assigned guardian legally, or through the state to determine the best interest for that patient. With Benefice, the law requires that the patient should be able to have diginity with respect to their own healthcare. They shouldn’t be denied medical care based on their race, color, social economic group status and receive a fair treatment as other citizens receive within the laws established by the government. With Non-maleficence, safety is the number one priority here. The patient must be protected from being harmed or harming themselves or others during their medical treatment and care. With Justice, the patient must be treated in a fair and appropiate manner that is equal to the treatments of what other people in society would expect to receive. This would be equal and fair humane treatment. Healthcare Ethics Paper Still even today patient dumping is still happening. Illegal undocumented aliens who are in a condition of chronicle illness or injury are being shipped back to their home countries through the use of air ambulances. When they return to their home countries, it is known that those countires don’t have the means or medical equipment to treat those patients and their mortality rate significantly increases. So is this practice an ethical issue. Yes because the avoidance of treating them is still the same issue as before by using the practice of patient dumping. This last year the President of the United States and Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordability Act. This law still leaves out undocument illegal aliens not allowing them to receive medical treatment. The law is still continuing to evol and it is in the future that changes in the law will be changed to include medical care for these people. BINOM.DIST in Excel Calculations with the binomial distribution formula can quite tedious and difficult. The reason for this is due to the number and types of terms in the formula.  As with many calculations in probability, Excel can be utilized to expedite the process. Background on the Binomial Distribution The binomial distribution is a discrete probability distribution. In order to use this distribution, we need to make sure that the following conditions are met: There are a total of n independent trials.  Each of these trials can be classified as a success or failure.The probability of success is a constant p. The probability that exactly k of our n trials are successes is given by the formula: C( n, k) pk (1 - p)n – k. In the above formula, the expression C( n, k) denotes the binomial coefficient. This is the number of ways to form a combination of k elements from a total of n. This coefficient involves the use of the factorial, and so C(n, k) n!/[k!(n – k)! ]. COMBIN Function The first function in Excel related to the binomial distribution is COMBIN. This function calculates the binomial coefficient C( n, k), also known as the number of combinations of k elements from a set of n. The two arguments for the function are the number n of trials and k the number of successes. Excel defines the function in terms of the following: COMBIN(number, number chosen) Thus if there are 10 trials and 3 successes, there are a total of C(10, 3) 10!/(7!3!) 120 ways for this to occur. Entering COMBIN(10,3) into a cell in a spreadsheet will return the value 120. BINOM.DIST Function The other function that is important to know about in Excel is BINOM.DIST. There are a total of four arguments for this function in the following order: Number_s is the number of successes. This is what we have been describing as k.Trials are the total number of trials or n.Probability_s is the probability of a success, which we have been denoting as p.Cumulative uses an input either of true or false to calculate a cumulative distribution. If this argument is false or 0, then the function returns the probability that we have exactly k successes. If the argument is true or 1, then the function returns the probability that we have k successes or less. For example, the probability that exactly three coins out of 10 coin flips are heads is given by BINOM.DIST(3, 10, .5, 0). The value returned here is 0.11788. The probability that from flipping 10 coins at most three are heads is given by BINOM.DIST(3, 10, .5, 1). Entering this into a cell will return the value 0.171875. This is where we can see the ease of using the BINOM.DIST function. If we did not use software, we would add together the probabilities that we have no heads, exactly one head, exactly two heads or exactly three heads. This would mean that we would need to calculate four different binomial probabilities and add these together. BINOMDIST Older versions of Excel use a slightly different function for calculations with the binomial distribution. Excel 2007 and earlier use the BINOMDIST function. Newer versions of Excel are backward compatible with this function and so BINOMDIST is an alternate way to calculate with these older versions.

In Malaysia, we have three main races. It is Malays, Chinese and Indians. Malays are the ethnic majority in Malaysia and they compose the largest population. The Malays are all Muslim. There are originated from Palembang in Sumatra. Most of the Chinese steps into Malaysia in the 18th century and most of them are from Fujian and Guangdong in China. It is the second largest race in Malaysia. The third largest race is Indian. Most of the Indian located at Kuala Lumpur. There are originate from Southern India and most of them are Hinduism. While in United Kingdom, most of them are white. They are 91.3 % of the total population in United Kingdom. South Asian is the second largest ethnic group which makes up of 4.4 % of the population in United Kingdom and followed by the Black people with 2.2 %. The population of Black and Asian people in United Kingdom is growing and for the first time that the population of Black and Asian is more than the White in certain area. We should accept and treat everyone the same. We should not be bias by the race of the people. 3.0 Conclusion Malaysia is very different from United Kingdom. The differences between these two countries are food, transport, language, weather, culture, history, and people. The technology and the traffic system in United Kingdom are far greater than Malaysia. However, Malaysia has many kinds of languages and interesting culture that we cannot find in United Kingdom. Every country has it own uniqueness. Therefore, we could not make a judgement that which country is better. Travelling to United Kingdom we can learn and gain knowledge to improve our home country. Employees accomplishing tasks or achieve a specific job duty, management can learn to recognize them for their achievements earn (Worman, 2010). ). Another suggestion would be to develop an Employee of the Month program. This program has been administered for a quite some time, especially throughout corporate America. Individuals should be recognized for their overall outstanding achievements. The process of this award should be administered and voted on by upper level management. Coaching is a form of employee development and recognition. Taking the time and effort to coach an employee for development can say about the company, that you care about your employee’s success throughout the company (Worman, 2010). The use of gags, gimmicks and time off are other methods employers can use as an alternate method to motivate employees. Employers can use these tactics as rewards to help inspire efficient employee performance. The key is to establish the perception of priceless value of the company employees. In addition, all employees enjoy the luxury of being given time off (Worman, 2010). Lastly, the most simplest and under-utilized method of motivation, is just saying to employees thank you for your hard work and effort. Each alternative method can have positive effects on employees. Money is not the only motivator; companies should always consistently incorporate motivation to employees. Otherwise, the best employees will be attracted by other companies when the economy. Incentive pay can be very effective and the plan must be well designed. Effective plans should measure the performance of employees according to overall organizations goal. Promoting employees is very effective it shows employees that their commitment to their work is being acknowledged and appreciated. Occasionally contests held within the company are very effective, it pushes the employees to compete against one other to win the prize. Overall for the employer this is a great way to promote effective performance because all employees are giving their all. Reward and recognition make people feel good themselves and their job, and their performance is directly affected. Analysis of how Transferable the Texas Roadhouse Way of Motivating Employees Would be in Other Organizations The way Texas Roadhouse uses monetary incentives to motivate employees may not be transferable to other organizations because not all companies have the same vision for the company, and not all organizations are financially stable to reward their employees with incentives such as cash. Organizations that seem not to be able to uphold these standards need to research different alternatives methods used to motivate company employees. On the other hand organizations that can use monetary incentives as a form of motivation for employees should use those incentives as a way to show company appreciation. In return for their hard work being recognized some employees may choose to improve their performance for the company because they feel appreciated. Lastly, it really does not make a difference in the alternative methods companies uses to motivate the company employees, the use of motivation helps employees explore their potential helping the organization reach top notch performance (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, Wright, 2011).

Leading Change in an Organization Essay

Abstract The reality of change is that it is likely to occur in personal life and business. In order for an organization to confront the realities of change, effective leadership is essential. Leadership is critical to the success of any change initiative. There are many forms of leadership that each come with a variety of personality traits, this paper will discuss leadership characteristics believed to be necessary to successfully manage change in organizations for the next decade and how to use Kotter’s change model to implement successful change management. Change in simply defined as â€Å"to make something different†, according to Mr. Neryl East, the author of â€Å"Change –What it is and what it isn’t† (East, 2007). Change management is the process that an organization uses to respond and adapt to change in order to improve its effectiveness and ensure continued success (Leban & Saban, 2008). Leadership is critical to the success of any change initiative in an organization. Quality leadership characteristics are equally important to the success of an organization. When good leadership is in place in an organization, it can be felt throughout the entire organization. When good leadership exists, positive corporate culture is not forced, it is developed (Mills, 2005). Leadership is defined as a process by which one person influences the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors of others (Leban & Stone, 2008). Leaders set a direction for everyone else and they help the people around them see what lies ahead; they help their followers to visualize what might be achieved and they encourage and inspire. Without leadership it is likely that a group of individuals would quickly collapse into argument and conflict. Leadership helps to point people in the same direction and works towards joint efforts.  Leadership is the ability to get other people to do something significant that they might not otherwise do. It’s energizing people toward a goal (Mills, 2005). In order for a leader to affect change in others he/she should possess many positive characteristics such as the ability to be a good communicator, be proactive versus being reactive and be flexible and adaptable among many possible characteristics to name a few (Group, 2009). As a leader, it is equally important to deliver clear, concise and consistent messages as it is to listen. Leaders should demonstrate a willingness to work to understand the needs of others. Leaders who are able to be successful at listening are able to ask meaningful questions, consider all options and provide leadership in the right direction. Secondly, is the ability to always think ahead, being proactive instead of reactive. Leaders who possess this characteristic are able to master their work environment with the goal of avoiding potential problems before they occur. And lastly, an effective leader will adapt to new surroundings and situations, doing their best to adjust in unexpected or uncomfortable situations (Val & Kemp, 2012). Change strategies that are believed to generally be effective for leading fundamental change are first the need for close and constant communication, it is also important to communicate regularly on the important, significant issues and topics. Also, it is important that all members of the company think and act purposefully and then communicate the assignment and required parts to each member of the department, positioning the foundation for a good fit with the company’s mission and plan. The leadership style of a manager during the change process can be either cooperative and consultative or commanding and coercive (Leban & Stone, 2008). According to Neryl East, the author of â€Å"Implementing an Effective Change Management Strategy†, when staff members are working jointly with management in a cooperative style, it can be expected that there will be both long and short term success to the company since the team will address issues and concerns and makes decisions in the general best interest of the organization. In the same way, when the decision is made by management to force the change, the staff may not be allowed to participate in the decision making process. (East, 2007). Following this further, the Kotter’s process of leading change model has good framework to allow the manager to work in a collaborative style with staff. Kotter’s model was established after studying more than one hundred organizations (Leban & Stone, 2008). Mr. Kotter was perplexed about the fact that the majority of change efforts were unsuccessful, and he sought out to identify the common error made in the change process. Kotters’s eight stage model offers a process to successfully manage change and avoid the common mistakes that occur during change in an organization (Leban &Stone, 2008). Furthermore, the Kotter’s model for change is effective because it provided two lessons, first that the change process goes through a series of phases, each could last a considerable period of time and second that critical mistakes in any phase can have a devastating impact on the momentum of the change process. Kotter’s process of change focuses on the strategic, not tactical level of the change management process (Leban & Stone, 2008). In retrospect, the use of the Kotter’s change model during the implementation of electronic health records at my current employer, Clayton Eye Center could have yielded a better transition and fostered a more positive work environment. In the Kotter’s change model, the first four stages deal with â€Å"unfreezing† the organization. These steps involve reducing those forces that are allowing the organization to continue its current behavior. The next three stages introduce new practices, â€Å"changing/moving†. This step shifts the behavior of the organization to a new level. The last stage is required to ground the changes in the corporate culture â€Å"refreezing† and make them stick. This step steadies the organization at a new state of balance (Leban & Stone, 2008). The first step in the Kotter’s model of change is to establish a great sense of urgency, identify crisis, potential crises and major opportunities (Leban & Stone, 2008). The passing of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) in 2009 by President Obama was the driver of change for The Eye Center (CEC) (Secretary, 2013). The system had to be in place by deadlines set forth by the government, therefore the  urgency for change was created. The second step in the Kotter’s model of change is creating the guiding coalition, by putting together a group of people with enough power to lead the change (Leban & Stone, 2008). The Eye Center was successful in organizing a core team, composed of managers from each department to provide various perspectives to the change process. The appointed core team had previously worked together on various change issues and working as a cohesive unit was of no concern. The third step of the Kotter’s model of change is developing a transformational vision and strategy. Create a vision that will help direct the change and develop strategies for achieving that vision ( Leban & Stone, 2008). During this step, The Eye Center missed the opportunity to develop a positive need for the change. The vision for implementing a new EHR system was often stated as, â€Å"because we have too†. This was an opportunity for upper management to frame the view of the change before anyone formed a negative opinion about the change. The fourth step of Kotter’s model of change is communicating the change vision, using all possible avenues to constantly communicate the new vision and strategies (Leban & Stone, 2008). In this step, The Eye Center was reluctant to communicate the change because they held hope that ultimately the change would not be needed. Once it was clear that the bill signed into law by the President would be upheld, there was very little time to effectively communicate the change vision and receive positive buy in from the staff. The fifth step of Kotter’s model of change is empowering a broad base of people to take action, getting rid of blockers, changing systems or structures that did not line up with the change vision (Leban & Stone, 2008). Empowering the staff, whether real or perceived could have been a very important step to achieving staff support towards the change. However, in the case of The Eye Center, only the managers appointed for the core team were empowered as they were the only members of the staff who had knowledge  about the upcoming change. Keeping the majority of the staff members in the dark about the change and not providing a platform for them to feel a part of the change was instrumental in the outcome for the possibility of successful change. The sixth step of Kotter’s model of change is generating short term wins, visibly recognizing and rewarding people who made the wins possible (Leban & Stone, 2008). Generating short-term wins is necessary to prevent the loss of momentum and keep the organization engaged. The Eye Center was not as successful as it could have been in this step. Approximately 2 months after implementation, upper management decided to reward the front desk staff for what had been considered reasonably successful implementation of the system thus far. However, the other 4 departments that were largely affected by EHR implementation and played a role in its success, although only 2 months in were not offered rewards for their efforts. This flaw in judgment created negative vibes between departments that needed to work together for continued success of the change implementation. The seventh step of Kotter’s model of change is consolidating gains and producing even more change by hiring, promoting and developing people who can implement the change vision (Leban & Stone, 2008). In this step, The Eye Center could make strides to correct past change errors by focusing on the continued development of staff with the new EHR system. The company should also consider utilizing previously purchased unused project management hours to aid them in this step to ensure that moving forward the change vision process is revitalized. And finally in this step, the company could build on polices and structures that have worked during the change process and remove all polices and structures that don’t fit the change vision. The eighth and final step of the Kotter’s model of change is institutionalizing new approaches in the culture by articulating the connections between new behaviors and company success while developing means to ensure leadership development and succession (Leban & Stone, 2008). This step again creates an opportunity for The Eye Center to build a foundation for successful change moving forward. The company could use this step to  make successful change a part of its culture by communicating to the staff how current behaviors do or do not line up with the change vision of the organization. The implementation of continued leadership development through ongoing training would also fulfill this step while preparing the company for successful change behavior in the future. A clear description of the characteristics of a healthy organization prepared to address the issues of change in the 21st century is upper management support and involvement, considering the needs of employees and an effective project manager. Change is almost impossible without the support and involvement of top leaders. Leadership must set the direction, pace and tone while providing a clear vision that brings everyone together (Leban & Stone, 2008). In order for any change initiative to be successful, the company must create a positive culture and motivate the staff, this allows them to visualize and buy in to the change project (Leban & Stone, 2008). Effective project management involves planning and coordinating all aspects of the change program, this allows the organization to place necessary focus on the values, attitudes and behavior of everyone involved to guarantee an effective outcome ( Leban & Stone, 2008). Without these characteristics, change programs risk failure. In final consideration, there are many change models available to organizations; the Kotter’s eight-stage model dictates that each stage be worked through in order to obtain successful change. Skipping even one step or moving too far ahead with a concrete foundation can create problems according to Mr. Kotter (Leban & Stone, 2008). In the case of The Eye Center, we see this to be the case; as complete follow through of each step could have yielded better results for the organization. The need for change is almost guaranteed for every organization if they want to remain relevant. Organizations that will succeed in the 21st century and beyond are those who are aware of what is changing in their perspective industries and are willing to take into account how those changes are most likely to affect its current success.
